What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, occurs when you are unable to obtain or maintain a sufficient erection for both partners’ pleasure. While nearly all adult men experience ED at some point, as many as 30 million American men suffer from the disorder on a regular basis. Almost all men who seek treatment for ED experience some relief.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

Doctors used to attribute erectile dysfunction to psychological problems or, in older men, to the aging process. Medical views have changed. Although it takes longer to get aroused as you age, recurrent erectile dysfunction is worth seeking medical attention. Also, the problem is usually not psychological. Urologists now believe that physical problems are responsible for long-lasting cases of ED in men over the age of 50.

Erectile dysfunction in older men

Erection mainly affects blood vessels. The most common cause of ED in older men is a condition that blocks blood flow to the penis. These include hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and diabetes. Another cause could be defective veins that allow blood to flow out of the penis too quickly. Other conditions, such as hormonal imbalances and certain surgeries, can also cause ED.

The vesicular processes that lead to erections are controlled by your nervous system. Some medications interfere with the nerve signals that trigger an erection. These include certain stimulants, sedatives, diuretics, antihistamines, and medications used to treat high blood pressure, cancer, or depression. But never stop taking any medicines unless your doctor tells you to. Illicit drugs such as alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana can also cause ED.

Erectile dysfunction in young men

In young men, mental health issues are the most likely cause of ED. Poor communication with a partner or different sexual preferences can lead to tension and anxiety. The problem can also be related to these things:

  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Stress
  • Feeling that you’re not good enough
  • Sexual fears
  • Rejection by your parents or peers
  • Childhood sexual abuse

Symptoms of erectile dysfunction

Symptoms of erectile dysfunction vary from person to person. If you have ED, you may:

  • Be unable to get an erection at all
  • Get an erection sometimes
  • Have trouble keeping an erection long enough for sex
  • Lack desire for sex

Diagnosis of erectile dysfunction

When you see a doctor with ED symptoms, they will try to find out if you have other medical conditions that may be causing the problem. They will ask about your medical history, including questions about your sex life. Maybe you have:

  • A physical one: It involves examining your penis and testicles.
  • Blood and urine tests: These check for problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and low testosterone levels.
  • Psychiatric examination: This can reveal if you have stress, depression, or other problems that may be causing ED.
  • Ultrasound: This allows your doctor to see if poor circulation is affecting your penis.

Erectile Dysfunction Treatment

Treating your ED will depend on what’s causing it and what you and your partner think is best. Your doctor can help you decide. Treatment includes:

  • Drug: Before you have sex, you will take medicines, they work by increasing blood flow in the penis. This will help you get an erection once you are sexually aroused.

If you have low levels of this hormone, your doctor may prescribe testosterone. This won’t help if a circulatory or nerve problem is causing your ED.

  • Lifestyle changes: Your doctor might suggest that you lose weight or start an exercise routine to improve your ED symptoms. They might also recommend that you stop smoking, drinking alcohol, or using marijuana or other drugs.
  • Counseling. If stress, depression, or relationship problems contribute to your ED, talking to a counselor could help.
  • Surgery. Most men don’t get surgery for ED. But in some cases, doctors will do an operation to repair your arteries to boost blood flow to your penis. Or they can implant a bendable or inflatable rod inside your penis that you adjust to make it erect.
