SpotHerld Actor Spotlight with Actor Graham Jenkins from the Psychological Thriller THE BOX.
1. Can you describe what influenced you to pursue a career as an actor?
The first time I saw the ending to Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I have always wanted to perform, but that moment let me know movies would be my ultimate goal.
2. What do you feel is more important for an actor, talent or training?
I honestly believe the most important characteristic an actor can have is to be completely present in every scene. That is where naturalism, vulnerability, and connection truly happens, both within the scene and with the audience . Training absolutely has its value, especially for the longevity of a career, and talent can be subjective, but empathy is universal.
3. Which types of acting do you feel you are most suited for?
I feel that I’m most suited for any acting within the Sci-fi, Action, and Thriller genres. I love high stake, high concept films . They can be such incredible vehicles for everything filmmaking can be and I know how much energy I can bring to those kinds of projects.
4. What steps do you take to fully understand the importance of your character to the story?
This is definitely a “no small parts” answer in the best possible way. Every character in the script helps to move the story and/or immerse the audience in its world.
5. Who do you consider to be your acting role model whose career you would like to emulate, and why?
I have five names that immediately come to mind: Viggo Mortensen, Tom Cruise, Mads Mikkelsen, Harrison Ford, and Keanu Reeves. Each for an abundance of reasons. I hope that I can help in making movies they would want to see.
6. What is the first thing you do to research and approach a role?
From a purely artistic standpoint, the script is everything. Good writing is simply magical. Beyond that, the first thing I always want to do is meet with the director. I want to understand their vision of the world and story, what questions they are asking and/or what emotions they want to evoke. Locking into a cohesive idea answers a lot of questions.
7. Describe your most challenging role to date.
I recently had to play a priest dealing with the aftermath of a major religious phenomenon/revelation. Finding a way to connect with a character so ingrained within a specific institution and belief system was challenging to stay present in their emotions, their needs. However, the writing and directing was so brilliant, the challenges fell away. I’m extremely proud of everyone’s work on that film.
8. Which film would you most like to have been in and in which role?
Oh, great question. Obviously the Mission Impossible and John Wick franchises wouldn’t be where they are without their respective leads. No replacing them, but those roles come to mind. Roy Batty in Bladerunner would be amazing to play also.
9. What music inspires you to create?
Tool, Mastodon, and Health are always my go to. Incredible all around.
10. What is next for Graham? Any new projects in development you want our audience to know about.
I have a few action projects in post-production and a Sci- fi Thriller in the early stages of pre-production. Unfortunately, I’m unable to say much about either due to contracts, but I’m excited for them and can’t wait to share more.
